Puriri Hills ‘Harmonie de Soir’ 2012

Puriri Hills ‘Harmonie de Soir’ 2012

From a special site in Clevedon, Auckland – a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Carmenère, 13% Cabernet Franc, 12% Malbec, from vines aged between 11 to 15 years of age. For many 2012 was a difficult wet La Nina year that produced a small crop but as always in the hands of the talented team at Puriri Hills they were able to produce a great wine aligned to their relentless pursuit of excellence. Held back 5 years prior to release with only 2500 bottles made. Sealed with cork in excellent condition.

Medium ruby in colour. Blackberry, mocha, a hint of dark florals – violets and nutmeg spice in the background describes the bouquet. Harmonie du Soir (“Evening Harmony”) refers to Baudelaire’s description of the exotic and magical mingling of fragrances in a garden as day turns to night.  Those who know me know the smell of a wine is very important to my overall feeling about it and as always this wine delivers on that. Rich almost creamy texture.  Lovely fruit sweetness with depth, power and concentration yet also very approachable. One of those “experience wines” where you are irresistibly drawn back to have have another sip. Round, juicy attractive oak and oak spice reflecting ageing in French oak of which 87% was new for 26 months before final blending. Lingering finish. I look forward to enjoying more of mine over many years. 96pts
