A red ‘Bordeaux Blend’ from Hawke’s Bay – with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes in the mix (I believe… details are scarce). Sealed under cork. A medium-depth garnet red colour in the glass. The aroma is classic Bordeaux, but with a tell-tale flood of ripe fruit that hints at New World. Cherry, blackcurrant, plum and boysenberry with a touch of graphite, old leather and dried herbs on the nose. Still fresh and bright with acidity well-balanced by chalky tannins – the palate quite supple and medium-bodied at most. Liquorice, black olive and some green menthol notes are present too but don’t distract – just adding a layer of complexity to what is otherwise a fairly straightforward wine. Has held up admirably, and was a super dinner wine, matched to a lightly smoked beef fillet. 91pts
