Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2019

Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2019

The one very disappointing aspect to this wine is that 2019 was the last ever vintage made of this true icon. Indeed it is now a legend, while also showcasing a ‘Legacy’ of what vision, passion, great sites delivering great fruit, combined with talented winemaking can achieve. The fruit was hand-picked in March from two iconic vineyard sites Keltern and Kokako (the latter I had the opportunity to walk earlier this year). Following which it spent 2 months in tank prior to 10 months in oak.

Under screwcap it presents as medium gold in colour. The flinty ‘gun smoke’ aromas so characteristic of this wine are certainly present, but to my mind have become more restrained with time. They are coupled with nectarine and peach aromas. Medium palate weight with hallmark concentrated fruit profile is present, but, like the nose, has had some of the young brashness softened. Fresh vibrant mouth-watering acidity with a long and elegant finish. This wine, while always good in my opinion, has benefited from time to become more integrated and balanced without losing any of its power and concentration. Many years ahead. 95pts
