Takapoto Estate Hawke’s Bay Reserve Chardonnay 2022

A Chardonnay made in the Waikato – at Takapoto’s winery near Lake Karapiro, from grapes harvested at Gimblett Road in Hawke’s Bay. Area medium-density golden colour in the glass, tinged with green. The bouquet is very varietal, with power-packed aromas of peach, lemon, grapefruit, hazelnut, quince and vanilla paste. Led by a keen acidity, the palate shows a decent whack of toasty oak as well, with the ripe fruit coming along for the ride. Bold, unctuous and broad through the palate. Layers of spice, white pepper and citrus pith flavours hint at some lees-influenced ageing (this 2022 is the new/current release). A creamy texture envelops the back palate, with power and presence. 93pts
