A wine from North Canterbury – the vineyard rests under its namesake, Mt. Beautiful. A deep garnet colour in the glass. The bouquet has plenty of subtle floral lift to it – rose petal and spring flowers, alongside cherry, blackberry and cinnamon. Dry to taste, with a light reductivity initially, and plenty of weight to the palate. The fruit is bright, juicy and tart, with herbal and spice notes adding complexity and interest. A spine of fine-grained tannin and well-judged oak are joined by a lick of acidity. Mocha and tapenade flavours give a discrete savoury tone to the finish, which has good length. 91pts
