Nebbiolo is rare in New Zealand – this one is from a single vineyard in Marlborough. A dense ruby purple colour in the glass. A pop of pippy, sappy fruit leads the perfume, with redcurrant, cranberry and cherry and then a touch of green, peppery herbals on the nose. A rustic style to the palate, with a touch of reductivity and edgy energy. The signature tannin of the varietal is there, with a grainy drag across the tongue. Bright acidity gives direction. Mid-palate there is also a beef stock and baked earth savouriness. Characterful and complex, it is one to sit and contemplate. 89pts
