Launch of new Wine Law Course – AUT School of Law

AUT School of Law has launched a brand new undergraduate and postgraduate course in Wine Law – the first of its kind in New Zealand. The course has been inspired by the pioneering work of Dr John Barker (Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and has a focus on the legal and regulatory issues that affect New Zealand’s wine producers, exporters and businesses.

It covers topics such as intellectual property, geographical indications, labelling laws, consumer protection, and export compliance, all taught with both a New Zealand and international lens.

The organisers are really excited to offer a course that bridges legal expertise with the practical needs of the wine industry. It’s designed to support the sector’s growth by strengthening legal knowledge among future professionals.

The course is scheduled to be offered again in Semester 2, 2026, subject to enrolments.
