At a lunch, the sommelier suggests that this wine is “the best Chardonnay on the island” – so I have to try it! A pale peachy-gold colour in the glass, with aromatics to match. Plush stonefruit with zestier grapefruit and lemon flavours. A little baking spice, white pepper and spring flowers top it off. So far, so good. The palate has some weight and shows good concentration – still with that blend of citrus and peach. Nice acid tension gives drive and there is a toasty oak richness that suits the style. Quite a compelling example, with good structure and carry, into a balanced, lengthy finish. It is certainly up there with the best Chardonnay on Waiheke. 94pts
