Gibbston Valley ‘Bendigo Uncut’ Pinot Noir 2015

Gibbston Valley ‘Bendigo Uncut’ Pinot Noir 2015

A special project that I’ve only seen from this 2015 vintage. I understand it was a set of three wines, using 100% whole bunch ferments and the same 777 clone grapes, picked from across three separate Bendigo vineyards. The labels were created by the winemakers – this is the pink-red one. More than that I don’t know…

A dense, opaque burgundy-purple in the glass. There are the beginnings of secondary flavours in the bouquet, after ten years in bottle. Savoury notes of tapenade, warm leather and mushroom sit underneath brighter flavours of cherry, root beer, star anise, cranberry, thyme, sumac and rose petals. Led by acidity on the palate, which is crisp, dry and medium-bodied. A lightness of touch at first, before the tannin swoops across, with a drag across the palate, highlighting the more earthy qualities. Finishing dry and with more spice, there is good persistence and length. 94pts
