Sam Harrop Grand Amateur ‘Merchant’ Cabernet Franc 2021

Sam Harrop Grand Amateur ‘Merchant’ Cabernet Franc 2021

It isn’t easy to find straight Cabernet Franc bottlings – but here is one using fruit from the well-regarded Howell Family Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay; and in a great vintage for the region’s reds. A dark purple in the glass. Notes of raspberry, black plum, cranberry, bramble, jalapeno, incense and tomato leaf sit amongst the perfume. Quite fresh and bright on the palate – medium-bodied at most, and the fruits have a crunch and vibrancy accented by brisk acidity. Tightly bound, with enough toast from the oak to add some warmth and depth. The finish has good length and it is a wine that should reward some cellaring. 91pts
