A Grenache from South Africa – specifically the Piekenierskloof Pass, heading to Citrusdal. A bright, translucently pale garnet red in the glass. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, redcurrant, peppercorn, lavender and smoky sage rise with some air. More body than the colour suggests, and a swathe of tannin grip in the palate – quite structured and taut. Plenty of energy and crunch of ripe red fruits colliding across the tongue. No indication of oak, but a granite-like frisson of minerality heading into the finish adds another layer of interest. The finish is long and reflects the elements in the perfume. 92pts
