Sheild Pinot Noir 2023

A Pinot Noir from Nelson – using a variety of clones (Abel, 10/5 and Pommard Clone 5) from the Twin Rivers and Livingston Road vineyards on the Waimea Plains, plus Whenua Matua in Moutere. A dark, dense ruby colour in the glass. A lively perfume holds a crisp burst of fruit flavours –  red cherry, cranberry, plum and redcurrant, then smoked meat, salami and olive, alongside floral notes of lilac and wisteria – it’s quite the party on the nose. Dry, medium-bodied, with a youthful energy that radiates out from those red flavours. Some earthy, spicy tones add depth and shade to the coltish opening. Tannin is fine-boned and the acidity just enough to add some drive – structured enough, but very slinky. The finish goes for a while, and has a pithy savouriness. 93pts
