A red blend, from Waiheke Island, and a vintage described as having ‘excellent conditions from flowering to harvest’. An inky carmine-burgundy colour in the glass. The nose has concentration and youthful energy. Dark cherry, cassis, plum jelly, blueberry and a smoky peat and cedar combine in intertwining perfumes. Tightly structured, with a swathe of grainy tannin and a seasoning of smoke and spice from the oak. The mid-palate is brimming with plush red fruit flavours and savoury notes start to nudge in at this point – peppercorn, bitter chocolate, graphite and middle-eastern spices. A generous wine, still finding its balance and integration, but with great approachability nonetheless – and potential galore. 94pts
