A Pinot Noir from Alexandra in Central Otago, made by Matt Connell. A dense ruby-burgundy colour in the glass. The scent shows not just good Pinot typicity, but also a great Central Otago sense of perfume. It has thyme, stony schist, lavender and wood smoke on the nose that compliment the ripe cherry, cranberry and blueberry flavours. The fruit has crunch and an energy-filled youthful bounce across the palate. Tannin is long, pliant and raspy. The abundant acidity is vital, with a lift to the fruit, offering ample flow through to the back of the palate. There’s also enough oak to matter, and notice, and it has a robust, lively finish with good length. 91pts
