The last of the ‘old’ LBC wines before the vineyard was pulled out to combat virus in the Chardonnay vines. At 13 years of age, the colour has darkened to a golden straw colour in the glass. Some savoury flint notes immediately in the perfume, with ripe peach, almond, pear, boxwood and orange blossom emerging with a bit of air. Quite plump into the palate, with a plush ripeness to the fruit – golden and rich. Toasty oak makes its mark, adding spice and depth. Acidity is just so, carrying the flavours into a silky texture with some creme fraiche, lees-influenced phenolics. A sense of sweetness shows in the lush back of the palate, but a mealy note balances that out and you’re into a harmonic, lengthy finish – ready for the next sip. 94pts
