Translating to mean ‘roots’ in te reo Māori, the ‘22 vintage is a Syrah from a small family-owned vineyard in Hawke’s Bay. A vibrant garnet-purple in the glass, with varietally-precise aromas of damson, cola, boysenberry, red apple, white pepper, oyster shell, tapenade and violet florals. The firm spine combines supple tannin, juicy acidity and a glossy texture into a parcel of complex and well-weighted layers. Flowing and fleshy, there’s also a robustness and distinctive savoury minerality that emerges at the back of the palate. The finish is dry, spicy and lengthy. 92pts
