Sourced from the Howell Vineyard in Bridge Pa, Hawke’s Bay – at one tasting I decided that this was their best wine. Revisiting the product now, I don’t see any reason to change my mind – although their CRU Chardonnays are belters too (and look out for a release on the horizon that could be the best yet). A deep ruby colour, with all the varietal sense in the perfume that you’d be looking for. Alongside the red berries, damson and bramble there is that signature note of smoky tobacco and old leather. Elements of oak add to that savoury spiciness – the middle of the wine is quite exotic and textural. Fine tannins with just enough chew to matter, and a buoyant acidity lead to a finish with great length and persistence. 94pts
