A dense, dark burgundy with the beginnings of brick starting at the edges. Black cherry, root beer, rhubarb, pomegranete, raspberry, tapenade and cloves on the nose. Dry, with the spice building into a savoury element that briefly overtakes the fruit. However, with a good swirl to energise the wine, the plushness returns with the cinnamon, sumac and star anise just supporting. Oak is sitting quietly to one side, and the tannins are now smoothly integrated. A good example of how New Zealand’s better Pinots can age gracefully, and still with plenty of character. 93pts
