A wine from the Yarra Valley label, but sourced from Tasmanian fruit – Tassie being very much on-trend at the moment – from Coal River Valley vineyard, next door to Tolpuddle. A carmine-burgundy red in the glass – a lighter shade than some, but it is all there on the nose. A smoky spice note precedes dark cherry, raspberry, chestnut, orange peel and mocha aromas. The palate is darker than you’d guess from the colour and perfume. Brooding and lush with an inky juiciness. A surge of verdant acidity, with energy and verve, radiates through the wine. Tannin and oak are tucked away discretely, supporting. A long, glossy finish lasts well. 95pts
