A Pinot from the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, opened after nearly a decade in bottle. Showing some signs of age in colour – a terracotta edge to the carmine red in the glass. Good Pinot varietal aromatics on the nose, with a floral lift of lilac and rose petal, above the cherry, elderberry, pomegranete and damson. Dry, smooth and harmonious – the tannins are supple and minerally; and although the acidity has paled, it has enough brightness to keep things flowing. A wisp of oak underlies what is still quite succulent fruit. The palate has depth and the appealing resonance of a well-crafted wine. The finish is dry, nicely spiced and of decent length. 91pts
