From the Alexander Valley, California. A field blend of 68% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Alicante Bouschet in this vintage – this wine having being made annually since 1966. Cherry, strawberry, mint, bramble, plum, toasty oak, black pepper, blueberry and fig, but with lighter notes of red apple and peach on the nose too. Tremendously fruit-forward yet complex and with layer upon layer of interest and structure. Good concentration, ripeness and weight to the palate. A baked earth, savoury touch develops as the wine gets air – with mocha, gravel and even tar. A balance of acidity, chalky tannins and an obvious oak influence provide a spine for that ruby, lush fruit. The finish is long, spicy and sweetening. 95pts
