A Hawke’s Bay Syrah, from the excellent 2020 vintage, and a Gold Medal winner at NZIWS this year. A dark crimson in the glass with a full and inviting nose packed with varietal pefume. Blackcurrant, damson, white pepper, raspberry, mint and violets. Youthful and bright, with a succulence and acidity that is framed with fine, ripe tannin. A couple of interesting elements crop up – first there’s a baked custard tart flavour, and then, much deeper, is a savoury, tapenade and black tea note. Some good character – considering the pricepoint. 91pts
