A wine from Waiheke Island, from pioneers Kim and Jeanette Goldwater who started making wine on the island in 1978. Opened after 31 years in the bottle. A mid-garnet ruby colour in the glass, a little brick red at the edges, but little to suggest the age in terms of colour. Similarly on the nose – deep, rich and complex but amazingly pristine and fresh. Dark fruits, graphite pencil, cassis, redcurrant, damson, mocha and chamomile. The Cabernet sets the tone and the length, with the Merlot offering a plush, roasted plum centre. Some savoury notes of old leather, cigar box and olives, and the oak influence is toasty and spiced. Broad and smooth at the back and with a long, sweetening finish. 93pts
Goldwater Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot 1991

I would have given it at least 94, maybe 95.
One of the best wines of the night. Kept improving in the glass.
Yes, it was very good.
