From Estate vineyards on Waiheke Island – a red blend with Merlot leading the way, with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in support. An inkily dark garnet red in the glass. An equally deep and brooding nose presents purple plum, blackberry, mocha, incense, cassis, crushed thyme and autumn leaves. Elegantly refined, with a tightrope of acidity, into the palate that has as many savoury notes as it does plush berry flavours. Graphite, soy, star anise, tar and tobacco duel with damson, boysenberry and blood orange in layers of delicious complexity as the wine unfolds. Tannins are ripe, fine and well integrated – as is the subtle, peaty oak. Sumptuous. The finish has enormous length and depth. 95pts.
