An oldie from the cellars – from the company that planted the first Pinot Noir grapes in Martinborough, back in 1980. A deep ruby scarlet in the glass, with some brick-red darkening round the edges, with significant bottle age (being over 25 years old). Still showing an elegant fragrance as it is released into the air. Notes of dark cherry, date, roast plum, redcurrant jelly and a spiced, vanilla overtone. The palate is more measured, rounded too, but supple and with a density and depth. Fruit is plush, meaty and resinous; the oak and tannin working in harmony and with a poised balance. As you might expect, the texture is now glossy and velvet, and the finish is sustained and viscose. A hedonistic treat. 93pts.
