From a vineyard just to the west of the Clearview winery, made by Tim Turvey and daughter Katie . Vibrant pale lemon-yellow in the glass, the 2019 version of this Chardonnay is as big and extroverted on the nose as was the ’18 which I tried last year. Compelling, it is perfumed with peach, red apple, lemon rind, cardamom, caramel and roast almond. Intense and concentrated on the palate, brimming with tropical flavours of ripe melon, grilled pineapple, nectarine and a spiced, nutty nougat layer. Acidity is crisp and direct; oak is obvious, layered (2 and a bit years in 100% new French oak) – adding an element of complexity rather than dominating. Rich, power-packed and with a texture that is creamy, plush and unctuous. Long, seamless finish. 96pts.
