A Hawke’s Bay Syrah, from the Paritua vineyards in Bridge Pa. Darkest burgundy-ruby in the glass, appetisingly aromatic on the nose. With an instant lift of violet, rose and lavender, then leading with dark-fleshed friar plum, Campari, blueberry, blood orange and red liquorice. Medium bodied and with a brisk but balanced acidity.
Fine, ripe, broad tannins take centre stage; and whilst there is spicy, sweet, toasty oak – it is in total harmony – lending just a gentle seasoning. Initially bright and crunchy, the dark fruits then dive into a tight core both succulent and dense. Spiced with black pepper, star anise and cardamom, there’s also a bit of wet stone, mineral and graphite towards the back of the palate. 94pts.
