From a slightly inland Hawke’s Bay vineyard, on a limestone slope – the 2019 is the second vintage of Kumeu River releasing their Rays Road Chardonnay.
The nose is bright and intense, with white peach, grapefruit, roast cashew and a chalky, mineral note. Medium bodied with a rush of vitality from the fresh, silvery acidity. Ripe fruit purity leads the palate, with stonefruits and citrus alongside apple, quince and baking spices. Oak is restrained but apparent, with a salted caramel, vanilla layer hiding in the shadows. A luscious, satin texture, offset by a lovely creme fraiche tang to the long, delicious finish. 93pts.
