From the northernmost vineyard in the country, on the Karikari Peninsula, this Syrah is ruby red in the glass, with vibrant aromas of redcurrant, plum, white pepper and chamomile herbals. There is a hint of rose petal and lavender on the nose as the wine opens up. Medium bodied – this is not a heavy, extracted style; with a finesse and grace to the structure, and a flowing acidity and tempered oak influence.
The palate is ying and yang – quite savoury with soy, tar, tapenade and iron-earth flavours, that offer a counterpoint to the ripe, dark red fruits – raspberry, rosehip and cherry. Full of character and varietal personality. Spicy-sweet, with root beer and liquorice on the decently long finish. 92pts.
