Greystone Erin’s Chardonnay 2023

wine from the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury – a single-vineyard Mendoza clone Chardonnay. Winner of a Gold medal at this years New Zealand International Wine Show, plus a Platinum Trophy at the Decanter Awards. A pale straw gold colour, with a green tinge to the rim. An alluring scent brimming with peach, pineapple, lemon and pear fruit. A touch of oak spices on the nose too. The weight that the bouquet suggests is coming, isn’t apparent on first taste – with the bounding acidity taking hold very directly. Heaps of energy and drive, before the concentration and depth of buttery spice does appear. Texture too, with notes of popcorn, hazelnut and oatmeal – richer in the back of the palate where the new oak really shows. I’d look to hide this in the cellar for a few years for it to really come together and soften, but you could certainly decant it now and enjoy. 95pts
