Mudbrick Vineyard’s star is certainly back on the rise – the winery taking out four Trophies at New Zealand International Wine Show last year, and then the Champion Winemaker Award. Oscar is their top tier Syrah, which won two of their Trophies, and has won another coveted Double Gold at the show that was just judged in the last fortnight. 2020 was a great vintage for the Auckland region, and this Waiheke Island wine did win a Gold Medal for this vintage too.
A bright burgundy-brick red colour in the glass. The aromas of plum, blackcurrant, blueberry, star anise, mocha, charred capsicum and hibiscus are intense and bright. That intensity it repeated in the palate which has good concentration and structure. Woody, firmly gripping tannins and creamy, balanced oak form the spine, with mouth-watering acidity framing the fruit. A lick of iron-tinged soil lies underneath the plush fruits and spice, adding minerality to the finish. A bold expression but has plenty of development and harmonising ahead if cellared. 94pts
