Made by a young winemaking duo – Alina and Masha in Marlborough, as a side hustle from their ‘real’ jobs making wine on much larger scale. Originally from Ukraine, they make the Brave Roots wines at Forrest. Their wines represent a “quiet rebellion” against the region’s traditional Sauvignon Blanc dominance. There’s also a Grüner Veltliner and Albariño in the range.
A bright, pale gold in the glass. The bouquet is exotic and beguiling, bursting with both energy and richness at the same time. The golden colour echoes on the nose, with apricot, peach and quince fruits, a little cardamom and a waft of honeysuckle. Coltish and tight for now, run by the crisp acidity (which the varietal needs) through a palate where a touch of oak and baking spice frames the lush fruit. A creamy texture doesn’t distract, just applying a little brake to the drive, and closing with a tangy, persistent finish. 93pts
