De la Terre Montepulciano 2016

De la Terre Montepulciano 2016

This is an Italian variety more at home in Tuscany than Hawke’s Bay although it seems very happy here. As a late ripening variety it did well in 2016 which saw warm nights and growing degree days similar to the highly regarded 2013/14 vintages. The fruit was hand-picked from low-yielding vines. Sealed with a screw cap. Bottle 963 of 1450. Once freed from the bottle my glass is filled with juicy aromas of blackberry, black Dorris plum and bracken. There is a rich, creamy, generous mouthful. Flavours of lovely sweet black fruit as well as mocha and a hint of nutmeg. The finish is extended with some oak prominence which is very attractive and reflects the 15 months ageing in French oak (40% new). I have always loved this wine and think it is probably at its peak now but certainly no rush. I look forward to my next bottle in around 5 years time. 95pts
