A wine from Central Otago pioneers in Wanaka that has been highly rated, including a perfect 100 points for this vintage from James Suckling – which at the time was the first 100/100 rating for a New Zealand wine from one of the ‘big’ international critics.
A dense, slightly opaque dark ruby colour in the glass. The aroma shows fruits in the blue-black spectrum, with liquorice and leather developing as secondary characters. Plenty of dried herbal and spice through the palate, where savoury notes flank the ripe fruits. A firm structure relies on the tight, fine tannin, although acidity is still hanging on and highlighting the juiciness. Minerality shows in layers of both peaty earth, stone and terracotta. Very well-balanced, with a smooth harmony to the back of the palate, and in the long, dry finish. 95pts
