One of the Escarpment single vineyard Pinot Noir expressions – this vineyard is on Cambridge Street in Martinborough – planted 35 years ago. An opaque mid-depth burgundy colour in the glass. A complex bouquet that is as spicy and savoury as it is fruity, but with an identifiable varietal scent – quite European in that regard. Medium bodied, with a balance of acidity and very fine tannins, in a bright, youthful palate that feels like it is only just hitting its stride. The fruit is just as fresh, with tart cranberry and plum notes, then morello cherry, orange peel and toasted spices. The signature Martinborough ‘bloody steak’ note as well as an earthy minerality is also present. It all adds up to a very, very well-made wine that speaks of the place it was grown. The finish is timeless and harmonic, seamless. 95pts
