A label from Northland – the organic vineyard was planted by winemaker John Clarke in 1998 – the location is now operating as Sovrano Estate. Chambourcin is a rarity in New Zealand – I find it hard to place other than it seeming ‘french’ in style, taking in some style of Bordeaux, Rhône and Burgundy varietals. A dark, dense brick red in the glass. A bright perfume with blackberry, plum, cherry, black pepper, liquorice and root beer on the nose. Some sweet and spicy oak shows immediately on the palate, and the tannins are both fine but also have a firm grip. Bold and juicy, with an earthy, savoury layer unfurling mid-palate. The finish is smooth and plush, with good length. 91pts
