Mélange ‘Carte Sauvage’ 2023

Mélange ‘Carte Sauvage’ 2023

A wine made from Riesling, and an organic vineyard in Dillon’s Point, Marlborough. Hand harvested and then destemmed. The wine spent 88 days on skins, then was basket-pressed into barrel – undergoing full malolactic fermentation. The result is an pale amber colour in the glass. The perfume has some riesling notes of citrus, green apple and lemon blossom, but there’s also ginger, honey, dried pineapple, jalapeno and fresh straw. Very dry, with a tightness and seems acidic at first on the palate. Salty, direct and with a nice phenolic grip of tannin and pepperiness. A richness that doesn’t overwhelm the other parts – in fact it’s a gentle expression, albeit with plenty of character,  that you can really settle into. Fascinating stuff. 93pts
