Fruit was grown at the original vineyard from 30 year old ungrafted vines and a small portion of the 13 year old top block, at Black Estate in North Canterbury. A mid-density garnet/ruby in the glass. The perfume is quite elegant and floral, with the crunchy red berries and cherry flavours enhanced with a burst of spring florals. The dry palate has a firmer feel, with sinewy tannin and a seam of stony minerality that keeps things on a fine line. A clean, natural feel throughout, the fruit simply taking centre stage, with a lightness of touch (and extraction) that will find plenty of fans. For me, it lacks clout and the finish lacks length and persistence. 87pts
