One of the single vineyard Chardonnays from Kumeu River – a treat to try a year on from release. A very pale lemon/straw colour in the glass. Intensely floral aromas, lime zest, wood smoke, lemon blossom, grapefruit, muesli and a flinty mineral note. The acidity is very direct – piercing through the citrus fruit, with a tight newness still apparent through the palate. Layers of baking spice, crushed shell and cashew nut flavours. A softer texture aids the balance here – with orange curd, honey and custard elements that soften the attack of the opening. Taut, linear and focussed, this wine just needs time – five years if you can – it’s all there, just waiting to reach a peak. 96pts
