A Hawke’s Bay Syrah from the ‘Artisanal’ range of Esk Valley wines. A deep garnet red colour in the glass, with an aroma led by boysenberry, blackcurrant and red plum, with a top note of violets and wisteria florals. Bold and concentrated in the palate, where layers of pepper, spice and oak add depth and weight. The tannins are fine and pliant, adding backbone to the juicy softness of the fruit. Add in a crisp acidity giving drive and direction and a sleek texture that holds the flavours together in the mouth, and you have a well-crafted young wine that will only develop more character if cellared well. 92pts
