From Te Awanga in Hawke’s Bay – the winner of a Double Gold at the NZIWS last year. A deep burgundy-purple in the glass. Bursting with fragrance – some reductive, smoky funk as well as masses of spice, juicy plum, liquorice and blackberry. Youthful and vibrant on the palate, with toasty oak, black pepper and dark fruit all jostling for attention. Tannin is fine and supple, balanced with a zesty acidity and an underlying minerality. Lovely drinking now, and no need to cellar to enjoy this rounded, plush Syrah. 91pts
