Checking out the products before travelling – this winery is a destination on my upcoming Field Trip to Victoria in April. A Shiraz from Heathcote, and a favourite of many people I’ve tasted it with in recent months. It’s the type of wine that would have made me weak at the knees in my younger years, but I have to say I’m not such a big fan of the bigger reds as time has gone by. This, to be fair, does have balance and elegance, but I also can’t help thinking that a young 2019 vintage wine like this would be tasting so much more rounded after a decade resting in the cellar.
A bright, dark burgundy red in the glass. A voluptuous nose, packed with black cherry, toasted middle-eastern spice, cassis, blueberry, pink peppercorn, orange peel, damson plum, pencil lead and violet florals. Generous and intense, walking a tightrope of breezy acidity, chalky tannin and nutty oak. Underneath and around flows the concentrated, inky fruit juice – seeping into every corner. Notes of savoury, warm black olive, plus liquorice and root beer emerge, adding complexity and depth. The finish is sweet, long and persistant. 95pts
