Quartz Reef Méthode Traditionelle Brut NV

Quartz Reef Méthode Traditionelle Brut NV

An updated review from me on this New Zealand sparkling wine, from their organic, biodynamically-certified estate vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago, made in the ‘Méthode Traditionelle’ – a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A wine I often turn to, and point people towards, as a fine example of Champagne-like wine, at a lower cost… and supporting local producers. There are others of course – look for those reviewed on these pages as well.

A pale gold colour in the glass, with a soft mousse of bubbles, and a nose that is enticing and elegant – starting with a yeasty brioche note, then turning towards nectarine, crunchy green apple, ripe apricot and lemon blossom. Intense but rich on the palate with a crisp acidity that give a tart balance to that lush volley of golden fruit. The salinity and mineral note that appears in this wine, seems to me to be an indicator of this sub-region, and speaks of the terroir of that Bendigo vineyard peeking through the glass. A lengthy, dry and mouthwatering finish. 93pts
