This week saw the launch of New Zealand’s newest wine brand, served up in cans. Originating in the UK, where co-founder Hannah Sweeney helped develop the brand; the label there has taken up over 25% of all canned wine sales. Selling into recognised retailers such as Waitrose and Marks and Spencers, it seemed logical to transfer that success back to New Zealand.
Using local grapes – both versions are from Marlborough – and a local winemaker – Digger Hennessey – the wines are two types of sparkling wine, and both come in a 250ml can. Each has its own identity – ‘Twiggy’ is sparkling rosé (from Pinot Noir); and ‘Leonard’ is sparkling Sauvignon Blanc.
Canned wine is intended to fill the gap where a bottle is either unsuitable, or unnecessary. Think a picnic at the beach, on the boat, or a hiking trip. They reckon the can chills in ten minutes, and three cans have a serving of a bottle, yet weigh less than half the weight of a bottle. You could just have the one single serve can without the worry of opening, and maybe wasting a whole bottle. The can is light and easily portable.
I’ve tried the rosé and it’s not bad. I don’t see it winning any gold medals, but I wouldn’t spit it out either. Like zero alcohol wine, it has a place and purpose, and I can see this being a winner for the people who it suits – a straightforward, zesty, sparkling wine that you drink without getting all intellectual over it.
Available from the 14th November. Check out wearetheuncommon.co.nz.
Received a Christmas present containing a Leanard can. Does this also come in bottles? If so how much per bottle?
Hi Bruce, I don’t sell it, so don’t know the answer to your question, sorry.
