From a small single vineyard in Bannockburn, Steve Davies winery produces one wine – a Pinot Noir of great character, that’s now made the Fine Wines of NZ list.
A mid-ruby with a little lightening on the rim, it mixes savoury scents of thyme, smoky incense with blowsy floral notes. The palate is packed with a seductive ripeness of red cherries, damsons and rosehip, but with more layers of savouriness like a warm tapenade, or roasted mushrooms. Hanging on fine-grained tannins and blessed with a concentration and spiciness as well as silky texture. It’s a complete package; delivering both a characterful complexity and yet a bright openness that is youthful and vibrant.
