A double-gold medal winner at NZIWS this year – also taking out the Champion ‘International Red Wine varieties’ Trophy. From the renowned Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke’s Bay – a wine with some pedigree. This year co-fermented with a small amount of Touriga Francesca. An intensely vibrant nose – filled with bright perfumes of bramble, nutmeg, raspberry, bacon fat, chestnut, olive, date, pumpkin and cocoa powder. Juicy and succulent with a balance of brisk acidity, sweet oak, and dry, powdery tannins, making for a very power-packed and characterful palate of flavours. As savoury as it is ripe, with notes of root beer, pepper and liquorice into the long, spicy finish. Enjoyable now – I would decant this and you’ll see good development over the time serving it, but this should cellar well for a decade. 94pts
