From Waiheke Island, and a vintage described as ‘a very ripe and very Mediterranean style vintage’. Dense and inky ruby purple colour. Brooding and aromatic on the nose, with youthful perfumes of damson, blackcurrant, cassia, elderberry, nutmeg and violet florals. Great structure, with a majestic nod of oak – now beautifully integrated – and bright acidity. Tannins are supporting, in the shadows, with spice and fruit taking a deserved centre stage. Lovely red-fruited mid palate with redcurrant and cranberry, pepped up with pink peppercorn, plus a little balsamic and mocha umami note. Softening now after a dozen years resting in bottle, but I’d give this another ten years good drinking. The finish has depth, unctuousness and an unfading length. 97pts
