The top wine from Destiny Bay, in a ‘left bank’ style, with Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) leading the way. This sets the tone, adding graphite pencil-shaving notes alongside the blackcurrant, acacia, cherry, white pepper, blueberry and provencal herbal aromas in a perfumed, defined nose filled with Cabernet typicity. Full-bodied and intense, with some muscular weight and balance, bright acidity and very fine, firm tannins. The core has power but the palate is sensual, flooded with ripe fruit, framed with a toasted coffee-bean, savoury oak influence. Deeper into the layers, the Merlot and Cabernet Franc elements make their mark, with liquorice, tree bark, damson jelly and eucalypt notes all playing a part. Well crafted – detailed and seamless, with tremendous length on the finish. 98pts.
Before moving to New Zealand in 2003, I used to visit France regularly, and drink some smart French wines.. and this is the best Bordeaux blend from New Zealand that I’ve had the pleasure of drinking.
