From Matakana – the vineyards with views over the Sculptureum gardens to Little and Great Barrier Islands. Perfumed with plum, bramble, cassis and rosehip, showing some green herb, nettle and floral notes. Dry, light to medium bodied, and with a restrained but sweet fruited palate. More dark red berries and a developing spicy toastiness through the layers. Some savoury, bottle-age character – leather, tapenade and tree bark – works well with the supple tannin. Acidity is fading, the warmth of the nutty oak hanging in, whilst the wine settles into a silken, plush texture at the finish. 89pts.
