Soljans Estate Malbec 2018

Soljans Estate Malbec 2018

A limited edition single varietal Malbec – originally made available for drinking at one of the Soljans Restaurant ‘theme’ dinners – Argentina barbeque. Such a hit on the night, the family were persuaded to bottle a couple of the barrels (usually set aside for blending) individually – the bottles ’labelled’ with a simple neck tag.

Inkily deep red in the glass; with bold aromas of redcurrant, plum, cedar, raspberry and warm leather. Dry, with a stony minerality and firm tannins, quite tight and chewy. The bold acidity is still integrating but a wisp of smoky oak does sit nicely alongside the concentrated core, where the palate is bold and spiced with star anise, soy, tapenade and tobacco flavours. A little sweeter at the back, with liquorice and blueberry Danish folded through. Robust and substantial, it maybe needs a little time longer in bottle, or a really good steak alongside in order to shine. It would stand up to some bold flavours, and I would be tempted to choose this if at a barbeque (as the wine was intended). 89pts.
